Outgoing Transmission – My Girl — 2 Comments

  1. Reading this reminds me of a childhood friend I was very close with. Looking back, you’d probably have considered her tomboy as well.

We didn’t go to school together for the most part. For the life of me I can’t remember how we first met, but we were in a lot of activities together (karate, little league, etc.) and I always look back on the friendship fondly.

No one every really questioned our friendship, but two odd occurrences come to mind.

The first was when my hippie school had a musician come to perform one night after school that was open to parents an friends. My friend and her family and her friend showed up as a surprise and sat next to me. Throughout the concert my friend and I were quietly horsing around and enjoying the music playfully (nothing disruptive). While this was happening I glanced and saw one of my classmates smiling and shaking his head at me. I immediately clammed up and stopped what I was doing. I have no idea why it bothered me, but to this day I wish I had ignored him.

The other was when we were in little league. One this particular year we weren’t on the same team and if I remember correctly it’s because at this point they had started separating the boys and the girls. I was at practice and noticed a group of teammates looking at the next field over and watching another team practice. As I listened in I recognized one of the players glove and realized it was my friends. My teammates started unfairly trashing the other teams skill, mainly because it was a girls team. I wanted to say something in there defense, especially since my friend was over there, but I was a coward and said nothing in fear of being made fun of. Before I left, my teammates pointed my friend out and said something to the effect of ” she’s pretty good though..” I sighed relief that at least my friend was shown some respect and walked away.

As with yours, my friendship faded somewhere around middle school. We recently became Facebook friends, but haven’t really talked. I’d love to reconnect in deeper way, but can’t seem to find a way to get it rolling.

At the very least, I still have good memories of our time.

  2. I remember Melissa riding down on their 4 wheeler soon after we moved in the check out the “new kids.” I also remember you two in the apple trees out back. Middle school with the emergence of genders roles puts an end to many of these childhood friendships. Such a shame really.
