Saturday Shorts: The Slap Game
Some weeks are harder than others. Ever have a long, difficult week that manages to stretch into a long, difficult month and a half? Those aren’t fun. What you need at the end of those is a nice, long laugh. You need some goofiness. And so director Slim is here to help us out. Here’s his short film The Slap Game, starring Jon Newjack and Alfonso Rodriguez as a pair of roommates engaged in a slapping war. Enjoy.
I love the pure amount of slapstick comedy in this short. Whether you want to admit it or not, watching someone get the crap kicked out of them is funny. Slim manages to go next level on this concept by utilizing playful music for the first half of the film, then going 80s training montage – complete with shredding guitars and sweatbands – right in the middle. These qualities make the final revenge aspect mildly unhinged and hilarious. Let’s be fair, if someone in my life thought it was funny to slap me, there would probably be titty twisters galore until the slapping stopped. More than anything, though, it’s a funny look at standing up for yourself. If you’ve had to do that recently, you’ll know it can be a bit scary, but in the end, you have to take back control. It doesn’t hurt to have a laugh along the way.
Happy Saturday.
