Trailer Tuesday: Flatliners (2017)
Goddamn it, we were doing so well. It has proven to be a gift to the faithful horror fans – it’s rated R! It’s well written! It’s well acted! The cinematography is great! It’s enough to restore your faith that Hollywood might have realized that we don’t need another half-baked film around the Halloween season. And then I saw this trailer for the remake of Flatliners.
Really. Deigo Luna in a mullet. Why would you do that? WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO THE HOTNESS?! Sony Pictures, you just want to watch the world burn, don’t you?
Aside from what they’ve done to Mr. Luna’s hair, the entire look of this feels like it’s cool mom and dad trying to blend in at Forever 21. This bunch of well-rested looking sexpots as medical students? No. Nowhere near dark enough undereye circles. The update to the technology feels like someone throwing money around to say that they can. And what are the additions to the original? My thought on a remake is that you shouldn’t redo shot for shot – always make sure you’re adding a new interpretaion or angle. I didn’t get any of that from this trailer. I got pretty people in danger. I got the same old final girl formula. I felt like they’re adding nothing. I am by no means a die hard fan of the original, but dammit, this isn’t doing the original justice. It’s a money grab.
