Saturday Shorts: Hug
I’ll be blunt: this election has left me gutted. I was in serious need of a hug. So in these times, I think we need to take a step back and not only appreciate the people in front of us, but take a moment to process that we can all use that human contact. Here’s Amber Yang’s Hug.
I love the animation style on this film. The colors are simple without overwhelming the audience, and the lack of dialogue works in its favor to make it more universal – there’s no need for subtitles. We get to experience this as something we all go through at one time or another. I honestly felt such a kinship to the young man in this animated short – how many times has this been me, or you for that matter? How many times have you blushed ear to ear (I’m a blusher), or wanted someone to look up from his or her phone and see you? How many times have you run off in your bashful state? How many times have you imagined what could be, even if it’s a fleeting kiss?
My advice: it’s not infinite. Take the chance. We’re promised nothing. Given, there’s consent and whatnot to deal with (don’t be that creep), but in terms of the chance to experience something beautiful… go for it.
Happy Saturday.
