Saturday Shorts: Nutty Christmas
Personal confession: I love nutcrackers. I have since I was a little girl. My grandparents had one, and instead of thinking it looked scary (which, frankly, some have complained about in the past, and with justifiable cause), I was fascinated by it. Then came my love affair with The Nutcracker and it was all over. Point is, this time of year, I love to bust some nuts. So for today’s short, I turned to the Ringling College of Art and Design. Here’s Kyoyoung Na and Yoon-Sun Hyun’s Nutty Christmas.
While light hearted and cute, this film has some funny undertones. How freaking terrifying must it be to be in the position of the nut in this film? And how grim is the damn climax? The nut uses a Santa decoration to decapitate his enemy! If I did that around Christmastime, I’d either be a folk hero (stores can get rough here) or sitting in jail. Possibly both. While grim, though, the tale remains cute. Sometimes, we need a bit of the good guy prevailing in the face of certain, systematic death.
Happy Saturday.
