Trailer Tuesday: The Death of Stalin
This world is completely absurd. If you can’t laugh at it, it’s going to get crushing. Which is why some of the wry, British political comedies are so much fun. Everyone swears; the characters point and laugh at one another; by extension, we find the whole thing ass-kissing and ridiculous. Stuff like this gives us back power because we can see it for what it is: a farce, a game and something that’s completely hysterical with a well-timed insult and prat fall. Bearing that in mind, here’s the trailer for The Death of Stalin.
Steve Buscemi, Jason Isaacs and Jeffrey Tambor? SOLD. I love how these deeply Russian characters all have English accents and sensibilities (believe me, Russian humor is nowhere near English humor. It’s an offbeat flavor that requires time. Think of it like a resistance to iocane powder.). Here’s the really fun part: two of the writers on this project – Armando Iannucci and Ian Martin – are responsible for The Thick of It. MALCOLM FUCKING TUCKER. If you have even the slightest bit of fond memory of Peter Capaldi screaming obscenties at people (my favorite of which is “fuckety bye”), drop everything and see this. Any team that created someone that memorable has something fun and scathing up their sleeves. We could certainly use it right now.
